Setting a Friendsgiving or Thanksgiving table

Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and Friendsgiving usually lands the weekend before or after. Either way it is one long meal at one long table, which is where rented pieces earn their place.

Start with the table you actually have

Friendsgiving often happens at home, on whatever tables can be pushed together. Measure them before you choose a cloth. Our rectangular linens measure 90 by 156 inches, which falls to the floor on a standard 8-foot banquet table.

A patterned cloth like the Morgan Stripe Evergreen Linen does a lot for a borrowed table, and it carries straight through into December.

Plates for a passed meal

Thanksgiving is served family-style more often than plated, so each guest needs a dinner plate and, if there is a first course or a salad, a salad plate. Warm, patterned plates suit the meal: the Kravets Dinnerware comes as a dinner, salad and bread plate.

Serving pieces matter more than extra settings at a passed meal. Platters and trays, such as the Silver Oval Tray, carry the turkey and the sides.

Flatware for the menu, not for a set

Flatware is rented by the piece, so count from the menu. Turkey and sides need a dinner fork and a dinner knife; pie needs a dessert fork; coffee needs a tea spoon. Ivory Estate Flatware offers all four.

Two glasses is usually enough

A water goblet and a wine glass per guest covers most Thanksgiving tables. The Melodia Crystal Glassware comes as a water goblet, wine glass, champagne flute and old fashioned, so a toast can be added without changing the look.

Small tables are welcome

There is no minimum order, for delivery or for pickup. A table of eight can be collected from our Lincoln warehouse, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, or delivered at $2.50 a mile for the full round trips. If your pieces are free, we can often prepare the order the same day. Send us your list.
